Google Drive rolls out Gemini-powered summary cards for PDFs But What's New?

Google Drive now generates PDF summary cards using Gemini, its generative AI assistant. When you open a PDF, Drive displays a concise synopsis and offers actionable suggestions, like drafting a proposal or listing follow-up questions, right in the preview panel.

These summary cards build on Drive’s existing AI features. Last year, Google introduced Gemini-powered interactions with PDFs via a side panel. That tool let users scan through dense files, then ask Gemini to produce email drafts, study guides or other content. Now, Gemini adds automated prompting: it scans the PDF upon opening and suggests tasks based on what it finds .

Admins must enable smart features and personalization in the Workspace Admin console; end-users simply double-click a PDF to launch the summary card in the preview pane. Users who prefer PDFs to open in a new tab can adjust their Drive settings without overriding the existing preferences.

Google deploys the update gradually over two weeks starting June 12 across Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. The feature supports over 20 languages and is available to Workspace customers on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Gemini Education (and premium) add-ons, Google AI Pro, Ultra, and legacy Gemini Business/Enterprise purchasers .

Summary cards speed up understanding and interaction with PDFs. Gemini now does the heavy lifting by offering task suggestions right where users view files. This reduces friction and boosts productivity for professionals reviewing lengthy documents.
